Altesino is a highly regarded, world class winery situated northeast of Montalcino and covering an area of approximately 64 hectares. The vineyards cover an area of approximately 27 hectares, divided into three different sub zones called Altesino, La Velona and Montosoli. The grape variety Sangiovese di Montalcino makes up the largest part of the vineyards, as it is used for Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino and Palazzo Altesi. Altesino has always been determined to produce wines of the highest quality possible; thus, the aging requirements for Brunello di Montalcino are even more stressed in the Altesino cellars.
With a deep amber colour, it offers a full-bodied, complex aroma with hints of fig jam and propolis followed by candied fruit, almonds, dried apricots, hazelnuts and vanilla. It is warm, embracing and robust, caressing the palate with its intense, velvety flavours. An aftertaste of honey and passion fruit lingers with great persistence. This Vin Santo, produced using Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes is made into wine after 4-5 months of drying and ages for 7 years in kegs, followed by 4 months in bottles
Tasting Notes
On the nose, it is rich and complex with hints of roasted almonds, honey, and dried apricots. Its full-bodied flavors of sweet, dried fruits persist long into the finish. Pair this wine with foie gras, bleu cheeses, torrone, or macaroons.
